Episode 80: Where Is All of the Pot Money Going?

img_4043The legalization of marijuana in Colorado has led to lots of media attention about record breaking sales and the “boon” that the industry has provided the state in the form of additional tax revenue. In this episode we deep dive into where all of the tax revenue from marijuana actually goes. If “schools and roads!” just popped into your mind, think again.

Marijuana tax revenue isn’t exactly the panacea to local budgets that the proponents of legalization have made it out to be. However, marijuana tax revenue is doing good things in certain areas. Join us this week as we discuss the good, the bad and the numbers that really made us rethink our assumptions about legal marijuana in Colorado.

In this episode we refer to numerous charts, budgets and graphs. They can be found below:

State of Colorado Department of Revenue site with all marijuana tax revenue data is here

Where the tax revenue gets spread (the two page, small print table we mention in the show) is here.

The Legislative Issue Brief is here.

And you want a flow chart to help? We don’t know if this will actually help, but here it is. Find  it in this article.
